Canada really gain a cultural superstar when Norman McLaren decided to move there. The quality and foresight of the NFB was apparently his motivation in making the move over from his native Scotland. Usually it is music that moves me the most of all the arts, but Norman's work is some of the most amazing I have experienced. Pas de Deux is possibly the most beautiful thing I have ever witnessed. He is also a real musical innovator having pioneered a technique where he actually scratched "sounds" onto the optical strip of 35mm film to create the soundtracks on some of his hand painted animations. I could go on forever about this dude. One of my all time heros.
